What to sell on eBay


When you are Make-Money-on-eBay, the first question you should be asked is what to sell on eBay.



The answer always seemed to be sell what you have a passion for or knowledge about.



The reasoning behind this is that if you have a passion for something then you will already have some knowledge of this product and will find it easier to research sources for these products.

To be honest this is the worst advice I ever received about selling on eBay. As a typical man, I am interested in electronic gadgets, games and computers but trying to find sources for these items where I could make a profit is extremely difficult. The margins are incredible low.

A more realistic approach is to find goods that you can sell which will support your income goals and then ensure that you price and then present the goods in a manner to capture a fair share of the market place on eBay.



Yeah...but what to sell on eBay?


It is impossible to say you should sell X or Y, as it always depends on the demand for the product. But demand on its own is not the whole picture. An item can be in high demand but if there are plenty of sellers then the price is coning to be very competitive and the chances of making a good profit are slim.

And of course, you might have a product that no one else is selling but there is low demand or no demand. Remember your product is worth nothing until there are at least two people bidding on it.

You are looking for products that people want but the supply is not so competitive that you cannot find wholesale products with enough margin to make a decent profit.

There is no way round it you are going to have to do some research. You need some ideas of what sort of products you want to research. Draw up a list of 10 products or niches that you want to search.

Now that you have a list of potential niches then you need to start researching demand and typical prices.

There are a few ways to find what to sell on eBay, the professional sellers all use paid research services but first we look at how we can do this on a shoe string.

The cheapest way to do this is to use the completed sales section in eBay.

With your list of niches, you go to pulse.ebay.com and look for the most popular search terms for your products.

With this list of searches terms, you need to go to eBay and click on the advanced search. In advanced search, you need to enter one of your search terms and tick the completed search box. Please note that you have to be logged in eBay to do this.

This should present you with a list of completed sales. Go through this list and look for matching popular items, noting down the sale price where they come from and postage charges.

After researching all your search terms, you should end up with a potential list of products and their average selling price / postage costs. Now all you need to do is find these products at a trade price which has enough margin for you to make an income from.

The disadvantage of this system is that it does not tell what products are the most popular or what is becoming more popular in each category. You can work this out but requires many hours of research and it is easy to miss out on popular niches or get false results.

Terapeak is probably the market leader for researching products and niches on eBay. I found extremely useful and more powerful then hot item finder but the pricing can work out to be expensive if you are not careful.

It is a monthly subscription so unless you are regularly researching new products it can be not very cost effective.

But it is worth signing up for a month each time when you need it unless you feel you are going to regularly use it then the bulk discount makes it a great deal for all the tools that you get.
